What are general practices that help keep skin radiant?

Here we find out the importance of having proper habits when it comes to taking care of the skin, according to Dr. Jarische.

Glowing skin means having healthy skin. To have that glow doesn’t mean to have poreless or flawless skin,” Dr. Ang explains. “To achieve radiant healthy skin, an effective skincare routine that suits you is important. There is no universal skincare routine. It is curated specially for what your skin needs.”

She adds, “for your routine to give the best results, it must be one that you are comfortable with and stick to consistently. Basic skincare essentials include having a proper facial cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen for protection.”

On top of that, Dr. Ang reiterates that “practicing proper skincare habits is as essential as having a good skincare routine. Though [it] is the stepping stone, one must adapt to how the skin changes too.” She emphasizes that listening to your skin is a must as it undergoes phases according to what the situation implies. For instance, you’ll have to apply moisturizers more often during cold weather days or double cleanse your face after wearing makeup.”

And of course, taking care of yourself helps a lot, too! “Exuding that glow also comes from within. Aside from banking on a skincare routine, having a healthy lifestyle is a factor. Eating healthy food, drinking enough fluids, & getting proper sleep contributes to healthy skin. Lastly, wear a smile! Having a positive mindset adds to your glow.”

What skincare tips would you advise for people who want glowing skin?

Since skincare is the foundation of radiant skin, let’s find out the dos and don’ts below.

You can never go wrong with the basics

You know what this means: cleansing, moisturizing, and sunscreen protection.

“Washing your face twice a day (AM & PM) will do. Avoid over-cleansing because it strips off the natural oils of your skin. Apply moisturizers that suit your skin type, and wear sunscreen daily — UV rays cause damage on the skin and hasten its aging process.”

Treat your skin concerns

“With actives,” Dr. Jarische adds. It’s always a wise decision to seek help from your dermatologist, too!

Exfoliate

“Starting slow and low is the commandment with chemical exfoliation. Know which exfoliants can address your concern. Because not all of us need exfoliation. But if you do need it, DO NOT over-exfoliate (2-3x a week is enough).”

Be practical with your routine

“Keep it simple, within your budget, and be consistent with it.”

Which skincare ingredients would you recommend for glowing skin?

Incorporate the following into your routine and you’re on your way to achieve that glow.

Ceramides & fatty acids

These are known to “protect the skin barrier, replenish lipids of the skin.”

Retinoids

A hard-working ingredient which “rebuilds collagen; regulates skin cell turnover, controls sebum (oil) production, improves the appearance of pores.”

Vitamin C

“An antioxidant [which] helps brighten the skin, improves texture, works well with vitamin E and ferulic acid.”

Niacinamide

This ingredient is famous for its anti-inflammatory properties, and helps rebuild collagen and brighten the skin.

Hydroxy acids

This type of acid “helps exfoliate mature skin cells, improves hyperpigmentation, improves the appearance of pores.”

Hyaluronic acid

A superstar for all skin types alike as it replenishes skin hydration (water content), reduces fine lines, and wrinkles.”
